Care & Maintenance
Taking proper care of your leather boots will ensure they remain durable, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing for years to come. Follow these guidelines to maintain the quality and longevity of your boots.
Cleaning Your Boots
Remove Dirt and Debris:
– Use an air hose, brush, or cloth to remove loose dirt and debris from the surface of the boots.
Clean the Leather:
– Mix saddle soap with warm water on a shoe polish brush. Create a lather to loosen dirt and excess grease from the surface of the leather. Focus on stitching and heavy wear areas.
– Completely wipe or rinse soap off the surface of the leather.
– Avoid soaking the leather.
Drying:
– Allow the boots to air dry at room temperature. Avoid placing them near direct heat sources like radiators or fireplaces, as this can cause the leather to shrink and crack.
– Boots may be dried using a dedicated boot dryer.
– To prevent rot and mold, do not leave wet boots in a cool environment.
Conditioning
Apply Leather Conditioner:
– Occasionally use a high-quality leather conditioner to keep the leather supple and prevent it from drying out. Huberd’s Leather Dressing is our recommended product.
– Apply the conditioner evenly with shoe brush or a soft cloth, following the product instructions.
Allow to Absorb:
– Let the conditioner completely absorb into the leather. This helps to nourish and protect the leather.
Waterproofing
Waterproof Treatment:
– Apply a waterproofing treatment suitable for leather boots, such as Huberd’s Boot Grease or SnoSeal, to protect them from water damage.
– Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application, and reapply as needed, especially after cleaning or conditioning.
– Apply beeswax to stitching for additional protection.
Polishing
Select the Right Polish:
– Choose a polish that matches the color of your boots or use a neutral polish if you prefer.
Apply Polish:
– Apply a small amount of polish to a brush or soft cloth and rub it into the leather in a circular motion.
Buff to Shine:
– Use a clean cloth or a brush to buff the boots to a shine, enhancing their appearance and providing an additional layer of protection.
Storing Your Boots
Proper Storage:
– Condition leather before storing for long periods.
– Store your boots in a dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the leather from fading or cracking.
Use Boot Trees:
– Insert boot trees to help maintain the shape of the boots and prevent creasing.
Avoid Piling:
– Do not pile other items on top of your boots to avoid deforming their shape.
Regular Inspections
Check for Damage:
– Regularly inspect your boots for any signs of wear, such as loose stitching or worn eyelets, soles, and heels.
Prompt Repairs:
– Address any damage promptly to prevent further deterioration. Contact us for repair services if needed.
Additional Tips
Break-in Period:
– Allow time for your boots to break in. Wear them for short periods initially, if experiencing discomfort, to let the leather mould to your feet.
– It can take up to a month of regular wear before your boots have relaxed to the shape of your foot.
– The break-in period can vary depending on use and leather selection.
– Wetting the leather and wearing until dry will allow the leather to stretch to its wearers feet. *Boots cannot be returned after this process.*
Alternate Footwear:
– Avoid wearing the same pair of boots every day. Alternating pairs allows the leather to breathe and retain its shape.
